Predicting the Past to Remember the Future: Lessons from an Enduring Health Care Innovation Center

Since opening in 2006, Kaiser Permanente’s Garfield Innovation Center has hosted over 100,000 visitors from around the globe and become a beacon for enduring innovation at Kaiser Permanente. Although many health care organizations develop innovation functions, few sustain their investment over time.

Using this framework, participants will explore lessons from thirteen years of developing, sustaining and re-imagining an innovation center designed to help them envision possible futures for their own innovation efforts. We will explore how teams co-create solutions that work for patients, their families and the health care system.

CMO Panel: Leveraging Consumer Marketing Practices in Health Care

Over the past few years, there’s been a trend to hire non-industry veterans to top marketing jobs. Health care systems are no exception. Some have recruited CMOs from outside the industry to freshly focus on the patient (and other stakeholders) as the customer. What are these executives learning as they apply their perspective to health care systems? Which challenges are truly unique to health care? How do they approach the industry wide mandate to do more with less? Senior marketers with varied backgrounds share specific examples and emerging best practices in branding, patient experience and marketing operations.

Panelists:
  • DAVID PERRY, Principal & Founder, Perry IQ; Senior Advisor, Stanford Health Care, Stanford Health Care
  • JIGAR SHAH, Group VP, Marketing, Providence St. Joseph Health
  • JANELL MOERER, SVP & Chief Marketing Officer, Centura Health.

Health Care: Future State Imperatives and Challenges

The U.S. health care industry is slow to change. It is prone to radical incrementalism and self-protection. That’s its history, but not necessarily its future. Its “Future State” will be defined by changes in five zones: clinical innovations, technologic capabilities, regulatory and policy shifts, capital deployment and consumer attitudes and behaviors. In this keynote, Paul Keckly will profile each of the tipping points in the five key trends and also discuss the implications for strategists. Most organizations are illprepared to adapt to the future state: most are limited by false assumptions or cultural paralysis. The “Future State of Health Care” is not a repeat of this past.

PAUL KECKLEY, editor of The Keckley Report, an e-newsletter addressing health care policy issues and industry trends.
